Logier dresses songs well The open shirt and cutoff jeans, bottomed out with odd-color socks, could put the three-piece-suit section of the business community off Pat Logier.

But his music, a mosaic of subtle chords and words that flow until they pique your interest, make Logier more than another kid who doesn't know how to dress, even for a folk festival.

Logier and Unknowns - Doug Hux on bass and piano and Rob Minderman on guitar - were among the performers who opened the Home County Folk Festival Friday.

Playing from the bandshell stage, Logier exhibited rare songwriting strengths and a maturing stage and vocal presence.

His ace card these days is "If I Knew Just What To Say." He didn't do the song at the opening show - his set was shortened because the sound system wasn't ready - but it was probably played somewhere in London Friday.

The song is the latest single release from Roger Whittaker, the Australian who seems to be able to pop off hit after hit. "It feels really good to hear someone with a known voice singing some of my stuff," Logier said Friday.

Logier and The Unknowns collaborate on some material now and Logier hopes to continue working with other musicians. Working alone, he said, didn't express everything he hears in his music.

Logier, 21, a Sarnia native, says he isn't a prolific writer, but he's very particular.

"I write a lot of music ... I don't write as many lyrics as I'd like to because I don't like stupid words."

The song Whittaker just recorded was written three years ago. It was pitched to Whittaker through a Toronto publisher.

Logier says his new music has taken other directions. Some of it puts the listener in mind of Harry Chapin. It tells a story with a moral.

Logier is scheduled to appear in workshops today and Sunday and the concert Sunday night.
